Yesterday I wandered just slightly beyond my usual blog-reading parameters into some Other lefty blogs, and although I had heard about it, I hadn’t before witnessed first-hand the undistilled poison that people are talking about the Dem. opponent to their candidate of choice.

It’s ignorant, it’s terrifying, and it makes me wonder if there is absolutely any hope whatsoever for this country. I used to think that lefties were critical thinkers — and I still think that of those I know personally — but I will no longer make the mistake of believing that lefties are as a group reasonable, rational people.

I’m not willing to use the word “progressive” here, because progression is not what I was reading. It was a recession to childhood playground name-calling and bullying.

(It also makes me hope that when my Irish and English friends give up on this country and go home, they’ll be willing to take me with them.)

And I think — no humor intended whatsoever — that this is the direct result of our living in an American Idol/Survivor world.

I make a daily habit of visiting TalkLeft, TPM Election Central, MyDD, Taylor Marsh, and DKos specifically for the hilarity provided by bilious comments made by commenters about “the other” candidate and his or her benighted supporters. These aren’t the only armed camps in the post-apocalyptic Dem landscape, but they’re the ones I visit most often. Some of the proprietors of these places try harder than others to check the choler, while others frankly seem to contribute to it.

The funny thing, of course, is that the commenters at these places tend to blame “the others” for the same intemperate behavior they engage in themselves.

The only saving grace here is the virtual element - it’s a tempest in a digital petri dish. Thank God that most people don’t read blogs.

(And yes! Very cool that you recognized the banner.)

That was my exact thought.

Now…how to get people to quit paying attention to the MSM between now and the election?

Oh, and I think we’ve had this conversation before, but The Day the Earth Stood Still was probably my first “favorite movie” when I was a kid. I wonder how much influence it had on my thinking?

It’s held up remarkably well.

Of course, I also grew up in the warm embrace of Rod Serling’s social-criticism-masquerading-as-horror in The Twilight Zone, Bobby Kennedy’s and MLK’s soaring rhetoric, and the British Invasion, spearheaded by The Beatles.

I was in the class just after yours, I think. Second-hand access to all of the cultural touchstones you mentioned. First-hand exposure to, uh, Mary Tyler Moore. But I learned who could turn the world on with a smile.

Now that you mention it, a Twilight Zone banner would work well here.
