Winner and world champeen

Exactly a year ago, I reported here that for the second year in a row, my fantasy football team had fallen short in my league’s championship round. The league title went to yet another unworthy in-law, and I was left to plot my revenge.

Well, to quote our wartime president: mission accomplished. My fighting Purple Stallions galloped ingloriously into the playoff with a half-game lead, then methodically dispatched my opponents. First the Hula Hoops, then Las Mariposas, and finally my arch-rival, the dreaded Knuckleheads. Propelled by my late-season acquisition of Kansas City running back Larry Johnson, my mighty Stallions crushed the Knuckleheads and secured glorious victory for their coach. That is, me.

I once heard someone describe fantasy football as being as addictive as crack. I am quite willing to believe it, and also feel that the NFL pays a bit of a price for the renewed attention to the game that FF fosters. Increasingly, we become a legion of free-agent fans: rooting not for teams so much as for individual players.

But just between us, who cares? All that matters now is that I am a world champeen.
