The spirit of Churchill endures

If the Brits could stand up to nightly visits from the Luftwaffe, they can certainly shrug off the threat of death through lassitude, eh, wot?

Brits ‘dying not to do exercise’

Most UK adults are so unwilling to exercise that not even the threat of an early death is enough to get them off the sofa, a survey suggests.

Only 38% of people questioned by YouGov said they would do more exercise if their life depended on it.

And British Heart Foundation figures show only a third of people manage to do enough exercise to achieve the minimum recommended amount.

This finding dovetails with an earlier report which claims that half of England gets no exercise at all. I mention that one only because it comes with a nicely color-coded map of “lazy” England. I could do without the accompanying photo of the typical lazy Englishman, though. Where do they find those pictures?

  1. The photo works to suggest the “obesity epidemic” is alive and well in England as well, where, unlike here, they apparently don’t post photos of HEADLESS fatties, as Kate calls them.

There’s an implication that those who don’t exercise are fat, which is not at all universally true. Neither is the opposite: plenty of those who get exercise are fat. Again, I’m channeling Kate and others.

Why am I blathering about this on your blog? You probably just didn’t want the stress of looking at all that naked male flesh! :)

  2. Funny thing is, what I noticed both times I holidayed in Britain and during the year I lived there is that Brits walk. A lot. They tend to live very close to the shops, pubs, and schools and walk there (just like the “new urbanism” the subdivision planners are trying to foist on everyone); they take walking holidays through the moors and dales; they tramp all over Europe.

I think the respondents to the survey perhaps did not view walking as exercise the way we in America would…

But… Brits believe in both plenty of alcohol and a pudding after dinner. I think perhaps that any “obesity epidemic” is due more to the amount and kinds of calories they consume.

Interesting point, Camera. There are bound to be cultural differences in the way societies view certain activities. There’s no telling from the article if the poll takes those into account.

I’ve only been to London twice, and stayed well within Zone 1 most of the time. I honestly can’t recall if body types there seemed notably different than in the States. Of course, that in itself may tell us something…
