Considerable space at this blog has been devoted to the purplish prose stylings of Harry Levins found in his Law and Order writings for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. We laughed, we cried (mostly cried) at the ledes that seemed more suited to a pulp crime novel than any newspaper this side of the Evening Whirl. We thought, however, that that stylistic phase of crime reportage had come to an end with Levins’ retirement.
We thought wrong! Carolyn Tuft punches up a depressing account of after-hours violence with some strong rhyme and descriptive excess. Emphasis mine.

I suspect that the years of sitting out with Harry Levins on the P-D loading dock smoking have rubbed off on Tuft. That is one clear benefit of secondhand smoke.
