Like St. Louis-based New Urbanist guy Steve Patterson, I have never been to a Rams game. Like Patterson, I recognize the importance of major league sports to a metropolitan region. And like Patterson, I fear that the cash-strapped Gateway City may not be able to afford to either upgrade the present home of the Rams or to build the franchise a costly new stadium.
Where Patterson and I part ways: his informed background in architecture and urban planning, which means that you should head right over to Urban Review STL where he and commenters hash out the harsh economic reality facing a city that may not be able to afford to let its NFL team ago - but may not be able to keep it, either.
Last time the city, county and state all found a way to fund the dome (even without a team). But the billion dollar question is this — at what point does keeping the Rams in St Louis get too expensive? At what point does the cost far outweigh any real or perceived benefit the community gets in return for the investment of public dollars.
Worth the read and the discussion, even for non-sports fans.
