Good news from the Show-Me State: The Claire McCaskill campaign announced that today’s SurveyUSA poll shows that McCaskill now leads incumbent Republican Senator Jim Talent 51% to 42%, with a margin of error of +/- 4.6%. That’s a gain of 9 percentage points for McCaskill since the last SurveyUSA poll taken a month ago, a impressive feat considering Talent’s advantage in funds and the torrent of desperate negative ads unleashed by his campaign.
More positive news: KSDK-TV, which hosted last night’s locally-televised debate between the two candidates, reports that McCaskill came away the clear winner according to polled viewers:
54% of the people who watched the debate say Claire McCaskill won the debate. 32% say Jim Talent won the debate. 14% say there was no clear winner. The margin of error is +/- 4.2%
The poll also asked whether the debate gave a more or less favorable impression of each candidate. 30% said they had a more favorable opinion of Jim Talent after the debate. 41% said they had a less favorable opinion. 28% did not change their opinion.
58% said the debate gave them a more favorable opinion of Claire McCaskill. 25% said they had a less favorable opinion, and 16% said their opinion did not change.
Independent voters are making the difference for McCaskill. With less than a month to go before the election, things are looking better for Democrats in this vital race…especially if we continue to support Claire.
