“Magazine style”

About a week ago I made a rather dramatic announcement:
Regular readers of this blog (all seven of you) will note a marked difference in the appearance of Waveflux. Gone is the magazine style layout provided by the fine WordPress theme The Morning After; that theme has been replaced, on a trial basis, by Carrington, a new theme by WP cognoscenti Alex King.
Today, a new announcement: the previous announcement is no longer operative. Is hereby rescinded. Is like it never was.
In comments elsewhere, Bitty asked the natural question: Why? The answer is best summed up by the oft-quoted, ah, quote from Brokeback Mountain: I wish I knew how to quit you. That is: I’ve just gotten much too accustomed to thinking of blogging in terms of the magazine style, in terms of compartmentalization, or departmentalization, or other kinds of -mentalization. The theme I had been using, The Morning After, was doing just what I wanted it to do, and it became apparent that if I tinkered with Carrington long enough, I’d likely wind up with a layout very much like…The Morning After! Yes: Duh, indeed.
As for my earlier complaint that the magazine style was “too much fucking work”…well, that’s true. But there’s nothing for it, apparently, but to actually do the work. Damn.
I still have a bloody-minded hankering for change and personalization of the appearance of the blog, but it will certainly take place within the parameters of a magazine style, and it will certainly be done by actual design professionals. While waiting for that happy day, we blog on.
