We’ve chosen to make this a quiet Friday here at Waveflux Central. Downright domestic, actually. To that end, let’s catch you up with the state of the domicile these days.

We now have a dining room! Didn’t have one before. Our dining room table was previously situated in the north end of the kitchen, while the room that tradition-minded folks would have used for dining was instead kind of a den for M and I. Well, no more. M decided that changes were in order, so the table was moved. Actually, it looks quite nice. “Grown-up,” said M.

Another view of the new eating space. Yes, two of the chairs at the table are rocking chairs, and none of them are the kind of standard dining chairs one might expect. See, that’s how we roll.

In defiance of tradition, the sofa that had been in the den is now situated in the kitchen. Yowzers! Our rationale is that since the kitchen is a natural place to congregate, we might as well be comfortable while we do it. It’s also a cozy spot for M to read or nap while I cook dinner. This makes M’s life sound a lot more cushy than it actually is. Behind the sofa are unfinished cabinets purchased from one of the home store giants; we use them for storage. They also provide a nice kitty roosting area in front of the windows, as you can see. That thing in the middle is a fountain. The cabinets are topped with bluestone slabs.

To complete the nickel tour of the first floor, here’s the official living room, now the actual living room. The painting over the wood stove is titled “Three Kings” and is by local artist Andy Leicht.

And the same room from another perspective.
And that’s what we’ve done lately with the house. M wants to paint next. Anybody wants to help with that, just let me know.

Your place is beautiful–and I LOVE the idea of the sofa in the kitchen! Very cool. I hope one day Mr. Shakes and I will have the opportunity to nontraditionally congregate on that sofa with you and M. :-)
I believe that will happen, Shakes. And I know you won’t mind sharing the couch with the cats. :-D
Thanks for the compliment! I will pass it along to M.
When the Shakes come down, I want an invite! (Like it’s really an invitation if one has demanded it.)
I love the way the cats have spaced themselves out evenly along the window ledge in the kitchen-sofa picture. And I am trés jealous of all those yummy hardwood floors and wood trim.
If the Shakes are ever our guests, you and the Hubs will have to be here. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. ;-)
The hardwood floors were a selling point when we bought the place, even though they could stand a good working over. Actually, we’re probably going to replace the entire first floor flooring at some point. Note the cheap tile on the left side of the dining room (first picture); that’s a holdover from when the kitchen was located in that spot. The kitchen was then moved to the bumpout/back porch space, and the downstairs bathroom took its place. Kind of a crazy quilt arrangement that we hope to change.
I’m ready to start painting our house. I like that green — I want something like a sage green for the living room.
I enjoyed this post. I have an obsession with real estate and renovations in particular.
