My latest stint of jury duty ended sometime after five this evening. Deliberations had begun some six hours before. Lawsuit: a lady fell in a sports stadium, hurt her knee, blamed unsafe conditions (wet floor), wanted medical, lost wages, pain and suffering. Brief trial, a little testy at times. The jury found for the plaintiff, 11 to 1, awarding a little more than half the damages she requested.
For the record, the lone holdout was your humble correspondent, who would have been somewhat less generous. Actually, given my druthers, I wouldn’t have awarded her anything.
Good group of fellow jurors; though I differed with them on aspects of the verdict, each of them approached the trial with earnest intent and a desire to make the best decisions possible given the evidence. Gruff but pretty good-humored bailiff/sheriff. Excellent judge, I thought, in Michael P. David. Even-tempered, genial, and so far as I can determine such things, fair. Seems to love the law. I’d be glad to serve in his court again..as long as it doesn’t have to happen in the next week or two.
And that’s that, until the next summons, which I expect to receive sometime in the next two years.
