Cubs clinch

No, we are not all Cubs now.

Ladies and gentlemen, your National League Central Division champions, the Chicago Cubs. Like I said in the front page listing for this post: goddamn. Even the Worst Sports Fan in St. Louis™ feels the particular sting that comes from having the Cubs clinch against the Cardinals for a historic second straight division title (in the same century, even)…though it doubtless feels pretty sweet to be Jimmy Ballgame just now, eh?

I was struck by this breathless postgame question put to Lou Pinella:

How do you keep this team calm? How do you keep the city calm?

An awesome responsibility indeed for the Cubs skipper. May Sweet Lou be up to the challenge.

That’s all the magnanimity I can muster, Cubs fans. The rest of my reaction is best expressed by Sherlock Holmes’ response to the romantic engagement of his famous associate and friend, Watson:

Really, I cannot congratulate you.
