Comment upgrade, a popular post, etcetera

Yesterday, I added a nifty feature to the commenting here at the old blog - a visual editor, courtesy of the MCEComments plugin for WordPress by Thomas Au. The plugin uses the TinyMCE editor that is bundled with WordPress itself, and the functionality should be familiar to most. You can apply basic styles such as bold and italic, and - best of all, IMO - turn text into hyperlinks, eliminating the need to post lengthy URLs.

I had hoped to further enhance commenting with an additional plugin which would allow commenters to reply to or quote specific messages - a useful feature when you want to respond to one person in a lengthy comment thread. Regrettably, that plugin and MCEComments did not play well together; the Reply/Quote function in the former plugin doesn’t work when the latter plugin is active. The plugin author knows why this is happening, but has said that supplying a fix is “low on the priority list.” Well, if he can’t be bothered, I’m certainly not waiting around for him…

Might be (barely) possible to effect a fix myself. We’ll see.

In other news, it appears that my recent post on easy work week recipes is fairly popular. I am glad of that, and somewhat loathe to remove the post from the front page, though that will have to happen in the natural course of things. More recipes to come as I stumble my way around the kitchen.

  1. HI Philip,

I apologize for commenting here on this, but your general contact form isn’t working on my computer.

I’m a musician from LA, I heard the Johnson family story on Democracy Now 2 weeks ago, and I am very moved by her story. I’ve written & recorded a song about her story, titled “Why LaVena” which I offer freely to help the family get justice, and help protect other sisters in arms.

As a side note, I’m also originally from St, Louis, and my father, a WWII vet is buried at Jefferson Barracks, the same cemetery as LaVena.

I’ve put the song & lyrics online for the family, and interested persons. And I don’t know how to contact them, but this seems like a good place to start.

    Please visit the site:

Also feel free to publish the link, or send it to anyone you think would be encouraged by it.

And if you’ld like to remove this comment, that’s fine.

Thank you for the good work you are doing.

  2. Sorry about the balky contact form; each of your messages actually came through, but you’d never know that because the on-screen form kept hanging. I’ve disabled the function that caused the behavior, and it works fine now.

I will try to get a link to your tribute up on the LaVena site today; if not, then tomorrow. The Johnsons will certainly see and hear it. Thank you so much.
