I mean, really bloody unlikely
Partition Iraq? Here’s all you need to know about that idea, courtesy of Army Reserve Lt. Col. Joe Rice:
“There is no way a partition would work,” said Army Reserve Lt. Col. Joe Rice, who recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. Baghdad is a deeply mixed city, he noted. “The largest Kurdish city in Iraq? Baghdad. The largest Sunni city? Baghdad. The largest Shiite city? Yep, Baghdad.”
Not that partition by force might not happen anyway. But it won’t be a good thing, and the United States is certainly in no position to finesse the issue. From what I can tell, America is radioactive in Iraq, and the best its influence can achieve is a holding action of finite duration.
Mr. Cole, meet Mr. Cordesman. You guys really need to talk.
