On deck? Or in the dock?
‘Tis a joyous noise: Home run king and general annoyance Barry Bonds may be mere days away from indictment for perjury and tax evasion. The perjury charge - lying to a previous grand jury about steroid use - comes as no surprise to anyone who’s followed the Bondsian saga in the press or read Game of Shadows. The tax evasion aspect - based in part on allegations by former business partner Steve Hoskins that the player profited from memorabilia sales without declaring the income - is a relatively new wrinkle, and speaks to the government’s apparent determination to get Bonds on something or other.
Hey, whatever. It’s all fine by me. I’m exactly not a fan.

Well, let me open by saying that I’m a bigger fan of Barry Bonds than I am of the Federal Gub’ment. :o) Which, of course, isn’t saying a whole lot.
Don’t forget that the meaning of the whole “ham sandwich” thang is that indictments are easy–conviction is the hard part. He certainly wouldn’t be the first well-known asshole to beat a federal rap. From what I’ve heard so far, the perjury stuff is all “he-said, they-said” at best. Maybe they’ve actually got more than gossip on the tax evasion stuff, I don’t know. Well, if he was damn fool enough to try and cheat them Revenuers, he deserves whatever he gets off of that.
And on the real side…..I guess they’d better get Bonds for something after spending God-only-khows-how-much of our tax money chasing him.
Heh. I knew you’d weigh in on a Bonds post.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve recently heard some ESPN guy say, “Ask Al Capone about tax evasion.” We’re all criminologists all of a sudden.
I was laughing from the moment I read your original post, because I knew that you knew that I would immediately leap over the top rope and into the ring for any conversational jousting about Bonds.
And I also knew that once I did, you would say “Heh.” Thou art a base and most troublesome knave, dear fellow. Were you within the proper distance, I would spurn you savagely with my foot. :o)
Any-hoo. I must really give a damn about Barry, since I jump out of the box at the mere mention of his continued struggles with polite society. No point in trying to appear studiously neutral about him any longer, I suppose. And yes, I was trying. Heh.
base and most troublesome knave
My wife says the same thing. :-D
