All that’s missing is the plunk-plunk

Whether due to ennui, lethargy, or some other condition that rhymes with “whee,” I have not been much in the mood lately for blogging on politics, culture, or on anything much more substantial than the state of my fantasy football team or a belated comparison of the candymakers Wonka. However, the latest report on Jeanine Pirro’s foundering political fortunes is enough to momentarily rouse me from my torpor. Good heavens, what a high-profile mess. It strikes me that the Pirro campaign, with its attendant themes of frustrated political ambition, marital infidelity, and criminal intrigue (with a guest appearance by Bernard Kerik!), has devolved into perfect fodder for an episode of Law & Order. But which specific show in Dick Wolf’s empire, I wonder? I vote for L&O: Criminal Intent: this storyline just begs for the full Goren treatment, with accompanying snarkiness from Eames. I smell Emmy!

I already commented on this at Sis’s, but let’s talk L&O. How did you like the season premiere? I figured it out before Bobby did, but I had help Bobby didn’t: the people who do the casting and credits.

If Martha Plimpton is your guest star, and she’s the first one listed as your guest star, and she has next to nothing to do for the first 40 minutes of the show…

[For this very reason -- well-known actor in seemingly small potatoes role -- I deduced who was the perp in the movie Kiss the Girls. And that was probably the last time I watched a movie of that ilk. Had Cary Elwes gone uncredited or been buried in the credits, with that dyed black hair (as I recall it), I might not have paid much attention to him.]

I was also pleased to see Eames get more to do that be Bobby’s supportive foil (yes, I know sometimes she’s featured more prominently), and this new boss…hmmm. And did we know before now that she’s the senior partner?

I think I need a TV fix. Where’s my remote…?

Oh, exactly. Exactly. Plimpton is awesome. Hasn’t she guested on all three L&Os now?

Even without that, you, me, and my wife certainly knew what was up when the cell phone showed up in Lex Luthor’s dad’s manbag.

I approached this episode with trepidation because I knew Eames would be captured; I was inwardly grousing about the whole helpless female thing, which is not how I see that character. I was very gratified to see her escape due to her own gumption and MacGyver-ness, and I have to admit that that whole escape sequence had me more than a little tense.

I know the season’s only two episodes long, but both eps made use of cheap visual effects during the initial setup. That has to stop, and soon.

I greatly miss Deakins and Carver, and I still don’t know why Jamey Sheridan and Courtney B. Vance left. Sheridan’s departure was woven into the plot, so I’m assuming that there was no animosity involved. As for Vance, I dunno. All I know of Eric Bogosian is Talk Radio, and that was a billion years ago. I see he hasn’t changed his hair style since then. Jury’s out, though I think I could come to like the character once the territory marking is all over with. I see that the ADA’s role is noticably reduced; the show’s Wikipedia entry says that this is due to the increased role of the new captain. At least we got to actually see the ADA in episode two, as played by Theresa Randle.

I think it was mentioned sometime in the last year that Eames was senior. We’d have to ask a true CI geek to find out, though.

I’ve been very pleased thus far because L&O:CI came on right after House - aside from bathroom breaks and snacks, I didn’t have to get off my butt for two hours! Sadly, House shifts to the same time as CI after the infinitely less important World Series ends.

I hadn’t seen any previews on the Eames-gets-captured episode, so it was all news to me. I avoid previews; they reveal too much. Almost as much as the casting and crediting do. And I too found the scene of Eames’ escape wonderfully tense.

What does it mean that I don’t remember the second episode? New partner, I remember that. Oh dear.

The ADA’s role noticeably reduced NOW? I presumed that was the reason Vance left. The show often didn’t give him much to do except growl that the detectives needed to bring him more of a case. Not a lot of opportunity to air the acting chops there.

And I’ve missed plenty of episodes, so there will be nice surprises for me when I tune into USA Network for reruns; This is one reason I didn’t know about the “senior partner” thing. (You are still a cable curmudgeon? Just as well; it eats up too much of my life. I think I have to USE it since I’m PAYING for it.)

By the way, best cop show ever? Homicide: Life on the Street. So says me, anyway. I missed a LOT of those. No one runs them on cable, even, but when they must because it’s the second half of a tied-together L&O, the ratings are ginormous. Someday I guess I’ll buy the DVDs.

World Series? Oh yeah, it is October, isn’t it? I grew up near Baltimore. Until the Os become contenders again, I won’t have a dog in that race. I could be waiting a long time.
