A tale of two states

Headlines across the country announce the overturning of California’s gay marriage ban by that state’s high court. It is wonderful news, and a victory for human rights and plain old generosity of spirit. As I read the various articles and blog posts heralding the news, I think back to a much darker moment where the voters of my state elected four years ago to codify discrimination by amending the Missouri constitution to ban same-sex marriage. It was a shameful and backward-looking act that, like today’s more progressive news, was also noted across the country and even beyond.
I can only hope that the effects of the California action ripple into the heartland and that the Missouri judiciary overturns our own ill-considered amendment.
