When the LaVena Johnson petition closes this Friday, that appeal for the re-investigation of her death three years ago in Iraq will contain just over twelve thousand signatures. I am grateful for each name on that list, every comment left, every minute spent in thought and conversation regarding LaVena’s story. Any sense of personal pride on my part has to be muted, however, when viewed in light of the popularity of such petition efforts as this:

More than 11,000 people have signed a petition to save Disney’s Virtual Magic Kingdom massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) after an announcement was made that the site will be closing.
And this:

And this:
Users petition to keep Windows XP
Save XP Web petition gathering more than 100,000 signatures, comments.
Not to disparage any of those petitions, or the causes they represent, or the people who lent their names to those concerns.
They still represent, for me, instructive comparisons.
