Denial of Global warming is wishful thinking. There are cycles, which aoccur naturally, but most of what is happening is not natural, for it is manmade and will continue untill it is to late. There will be many more changes, yet to be seen. There will be more people that will blindly deny global warming, but the temperature will keep rising! The storms will get more intense and frequent, the Rain Forests will continue to be cut down, the oceans will contain more ethyl-mercury and the fish will keep poisioning the people!
We are responsible for global warming in much the same way we were responsible for the last ice age. When are we going to admit that the earth will do pretty much what it wants to, regardless of our input. Global warming cannot be stopped or swayed and to think that it can is self centered and misguided. That being said, how about we stop polluting the environment because it’s the right thing to do morally?
Would somebody send some global warming my way, please? I had to bring in many plants yesterday, because it was supposed to get down to 32F degrees, which is very cold for my Zone8/9 area this late in March. It actually got down to 32.6F degrees - is that extra .6F degree global warming?
I doubt that the people in the upper midwest, buried under record snow, believe in this hoax!
When it is all said and done, and the ocean has eaten all the coastlines and the weather has changed and drought is everywhere; it won’t matter who is right. I don’t think displaced persons, like in Bangladesh, will care who is right or wrong when the flooding starts. All they will want is food and shelter. And, if you are alive at this time in global history, perhaps you might be hungry and homeless yourself (or your children). I say our only hope is prayer because it will take a miracle to save our civilization as we now know it.
I can’t believe people actually deny global warming based on the fact that they are experiencing cold weather…
People, cold weather still happens. The average temperature in most of the zones we live in has barely changed, but the average temperatures in the arctic have been rising much faster.
I know, I know…”well I don’t live in the arctic.” Right, great argument. I suppose the facts of the doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide are disbelieved by this bunch of evolution-denying lunatics as well.
go hug what tree? You will be looking for one to hug when the floods come retard.
In the bible it says God will not flood the earth or rather destory by flood. Is a real sign, it will be destoryed by fire which most assholes thought was nuclear war but maybe it is global warming.
Never mind the fact that Antarctica has been warming for hundreds of years now, THIS must be due to man made global warming. Back in the 70’s I was told in school that “experts” said we were heading towards another ice age. Now we’re all going to die and every time a drop of water melts off a piece of ice we are told that global warming is to blame. The truth of the matter is the climate is ALWAYS changing, remember that it supposedly made dramatic changes several times long before humans drove SUVs. How could that be possible if we weren’t the ones to cause the change? The answer is the Earth rolls on whether we’re here or not and while we’re definitely not acting as good stewards of our planet, we’re also not responsible for every degree of temperature change either.
I don’t blame the average person when they buy into this global warming politically correct “fact”. I blame the media and their constant drive to find the next fear based panic story to push on the public. Media outlets sell Chicken Little “The Sky is Falling!” stories as often as they can. Let’s rewind and review some of them. .. Eggs are bad for you and the cholesterol will kill you! The next ice age is coming! Bird Flu, not a matter of IF, but WHEN! SARS! etc. etc. etc., blah blah blah.
It’s marginal science (if I remember correctly the climate models do not take into account water vapor. . . WATER VAPOR. .. a MAJOR factor in determining climate) that is blown out of proportion by sensationalist journalism. Yes, we need to stop polluting our environment and strive to create alternative fuels, but the current hysteria is out of control.
The climate is always changing, there appears to be no “correct” temperature or climate because we’ve cycled through various ice ages, etc. I think the real reason you notice this in your 20 years is that the news media has turned into tabloid sensationalist news media. They make the biggest deal possible out any story they can and I think viewers (or readers of print) are easily misled by this sensationalism. Most of us (myself included at times) still like to cling to the idea that the people giving us this message are unbiased and would never prostitute themselves for ratings, or would never sensationalize a story for ratings, and that is just not true any more (maybe it never was, but I was too young to notice).
I think global warming is happening in certain areas, but that does not prove humans are THE driving force behind it, and there are plenty of scientists who say this global warming hysteria is unfounded. The problem is this has become a political issue, and once politics is involved the truth usually takes a vacation.
The bottom line is we need to take the news media with a HUGE grain of salt because they’ve turned the corner from news to “infotainment” and their motivations are suspect any more.
global warming works both ways and leads to extreme, unnatural climate and temperature shifts. While it’s nice to walk around in flip flops in Syracuse, NY in late November, it’s not natural. Are 12 ft. snow walls natural? Don’t be so quick to dismiss the signs we’re getting. Yeah it sucks having to take your plants in, I get that, but it’s going to be a lot worse when, years from now, we won’t have any plants at all. I’d love my great-great-great grandchildren to live in a world where they don’t have to put on SPF 60 every day (like in parts of Australia) or wear face masks to keep their lungs clean. If it means I need to run my house on windpower (easy to do, just ask about it!), use recycled paper products, take showers and use efficient appliances, drive a hybrid (i live in a city, but the Prius is amazing) or any of the countlessly EASY things I’ve found to change, then so be it. It’s great and my conscience is clear. And what’s so wrong with being healthy?
P.s. No offense, but news reports give you no background. Try reading any Bill McKibben literature for that. It’s hugely ignorant to simply dismiss something that you personally don’t believe to be true. You’re entitled to an opinion, but all this attention this “warming” is getting? It’s a fact; it’s not going away. Ignoring it is just bad for families and their futures. And who wants that?
Southern Hemisphere Sea Ice Extent has been increasing the past 5 years and reached record level of 16.1 million square kilometers. Presently Antarctic sea ice extent is 1 milion square kilometers greater than the 30 year mean. Doesn’t seem like man made global warming is operating in the antarctic. Check the Cryosphere Today Website(a pro AGW site) for confirmation:
In the contiguous United States, the average winter temperature was 33.2°F (0.6°C), which was 0.2°F (0.1°C) above the 20th century average – yet still ranks as the coolest since 2001. It was the 54th coolest winter since national records began in 1895.
Globally, Jan-Feb 2008 was the 22nd warmest since record keeping began. 34th warmest for land area.
Its getting cooler folks. Its caused by the sun. Solar cycle 23 is 11.8 years long now. The sun has been at the solar cycle minimum for 2 years now. A similar cooling trend occured in the late 70’s at the tail end of solar cycle 20. Cycles 21 and 22 where short and intense. This is the cause of the recent warming.
I finally figured out how to comment on these tidbits.
People — “global warming” is just a name. Ask a scientist: the actual event is global climate change. So it may be all cold in your backyard, but warm where it shouldn’t be — like the arctic.
(Phil, what’s going on? Did you leave the backdoor open?)
Why are you fixated on the arctic. What about the antarctic. Record sea ice in the antarctic doesn’t deserve notice or debate? Also global temps are down. That’s worldwide temps. Go to http://www.noaa.gov and see for your self. Also at the Cryosphere Today website you can see that arctic sea ice extent has recovered spectacularly. From All time low to nearly average. Yes I know that old ice has been decimated, but to go from all time low extent to near normal extent is remarkable. Also “global” sea ice extent is currently 1 million square kilometers greater than the 30 year mean. I repeat once again to make sure you understand, “GLOBAL SEA ICE EXTENT” is over 1 MILLION square kilometers greater than the 30 year mean.
So you’re going to shut the Iceman down? What a typical way to address some one with an opposing view. The reason that your opinions seldom hold water is because you are not open to debate, therefore cannot be enlightend. We’ll never be able to get the real answers to life’s questions if we refuse to communicate.
dsanchez: Yeah, you’ve got me pegged. Penetrating insight!
“The Iceman” has four comments posted plus another four that WordPress withheld as spam for some reason or other. Like I said, he’s had his say, he’s made his point, and this isn’t his personal soapbox. Yours either, if you get me.
I’m sorry if this rubs anyone the wrong way, but shutting Iceman down is a perfect example of what’s going on in the debate on global warming, or climate change, or whatever the latest catch phrase is. Iceman brings some contradictory views to the debate and he’s shut down? The same thing is happening to any dissenting scientist on the topic of climate change. They don’t get press coverage and in the absence of a dissenting opinion (and dissenting facts to back it up) the only thing people hear is the sky is falling.
I guess I didn’t see a limit to the number of posts on this site and Iceman has certainly been cordial in the debate. I certainly wouldn’t censor someone from stating their opinion as long as they’ve been polite and contributed to the discussion, and I see no reason to shut him down from where I sit.
This doesn’t have anything to do with debate, or being defensive, or silencing a point of view. iceman’s comments caught my attention not because of his stance on the issue - to which he is certainly entitled - but because he had as many posts in my spam filter as he had on the actual blog. Actually, slightly more. It might have been a result of exuberance, but it seemed awfully spam-like to me at the time. That’s why I decided to shut him down; had he been a global warming proponent, I’d have made the same decision. Not a matter of “sides.”
All that said, I don’t want anyone to feel that debate is unwelcome here, and I apologize to iceman for having gone directly to “suspicious mode” first. Should you wish to continue commenting on the topic, you’d be welcome.
If the ice caps melted the earth would not be deluged by water. Water expands when it freezes and the caps are currently displacing more water than they actually contain. We would see exactly the opposite of a deluge. Coastal water lines would recede a little, not overflow…
Watch “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” while you’re at it too. This is the same Al Gore who believe so fervently about this, yet has planes/limos/multiple houses, etc? He’s not exactly setting a good example if he really believes it, is he?
Despite that, Al Gore’s hypocrisy does not have anything to do with either the movie or the facts. The facts are NOT indisputable and as Iceman and others have clearly shown, dissenting opinions based on dissenting facts are not at a shortage. The inconvenient truth is that this issue is less about facts and more about scare tactics, hype, politics, and MONEY.

What’s the matter did the truth hurt so bad you have to resort to lies and namecalling?
We are responsible for global warming in much the same way we were responsible for the last ice age. 20 years ago wheather was normal, believe you me I live in canada and I see a major difference and its not amazing to see whats happening
Think about this for a minute
Take a ware house and put ONE running car in it, you will might survive the polution.
but fill the whole warehouse and you will die.
Meaning one person can not make a difference, But the whole world might.

yes but remember this when did it say in letters or in books that what year was the last dramatic change.
And how come in my 20 years, it seem its getting worst every year.
I dont know sorry

By the way 1 milion square kilometers is an area twice the size of Alaska.

:-D
By far the most comments I’ve ever gotten - and on a minor post, at that.
I’m about to shut iceman down, I think; he’s more than had his say. Note to iceman: thanks for the comments, but it’s time you started your own blog.
Phil,

Geez guys,
It sounds a little tense in here. Phil, don’t be so defensive. These guys are just trying to express a point of view.
Let’s all take a deep breath and have a hug.
