St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted for front page design

This blog has cuffed the Post-Dispatch around a time or two for the unfortunate design of its online edition, but it should be noted that the print version of the paper has come in for praise. In a roundup of award-winning newspaper designs, Smashing Magazine spotlights the kudos given the P-D by Best Front Design last year for its Saturday tabloid issue featuring the recovery of kidnapped boys Ben Ownby and Shawn Hornbeck.

The BFD verdict:

No one topped the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s display of the story about the two kidnapped boys found alive.

The P-D led their page with a strong headline, which helped to organize the words and images beneath. Then they used parallel construction to give equal weight to the story of each boy, rather than trying to make one image dominant. There was a clear hierarchy to the information, allowing readers to process words and images quickly.

Deserved congratulations to the Post-Dispatch! Now let’s apply this clear, whitespaced, organized approach to STLtoday.com. Please?
