It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish

My vision of the outcome of this season’s opening weekend of fantasy football action (hardly a non sequitur) resembled this graphic from a poster for 300:

And indeed it did - but it was my beloved, fighting Purple Stallions who took the big fall.

Bitten again by the lousy QB bug, plus one gutless choice (benching a rookie running back who would up scoring), a couple of untimely injuries, and some plain old bad luck. Still, things could have turned in my favor with just a couple of breaks, which is why I need to adopt the long view.

In truth, I expected a slow start to the season. This is what they call a “deep league,” with so many teams that you can’t help but scrape the bottom of the NFL talent barrel. The draft left little value to be plucked from the waiver wire. I drafted fairly late, 16th place, and tried to build the team around a core of solid RBs and serviceable WRs instead of reaching for flashy, marquee stars. Time will tell if this strategy will pay off.

See how calm I am this season? Serenity now - that’s my motto.

Addendum: Bad on me for not mentioning that this league - the MaximumUltimateSuperLeague - is run by über-blogger and devoted Redskins fan Oliver Willis. The participants are mostly readers of his liberal bomb-throwing website, which accounts for such team names as the Impeach Cobblers or the Commander Guys.

  1. It’s a bigger league than last year, too, yes? I thought you only had about 6 or 8 competitors last season.

  2. Yes, this is what I meant by “deep” league (and why I assumed that everyone knows that that means, I don’t know). Twenty competitors sucking up every ambulatory running back in the league. Makes for a bit of a challenge. But I’m going to stay serene this season…

    …hah!

  3. You should not assume I know much of anything about sports. However, I have two sons and all on their own they decided they wanted to play football. So I learned a little about football, but not about league politics!
