More purple prose

The editors at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch have got to get Harry Levins off the crime blotter beat. His writing there, to put it mildly, is awful. What he does with ledes (link defunct, but trust me) is itself a kind of misdemeanor:

First, a Molotov cocktail smashed through a window. Then, a bullet smashed into a woman’s leg.

Oy! The sad thing is that he’s capable of much worse.

  1. Somebody’s a frustrated mystery novelist… (sigh)

  2. Good call. There’s a pulpy, hard-boiled affect to Levin’s law & order pieces that is jarringly out of place in a newspaper that’s not the Evening Whirl.

Ultimately, though, it’s just bad writing. If you saw those lines in a crime novel, you’d put the book back on the shelf.
